MAYFIELD Metal System
“I shouldn’t be thinking about my head holder while I’m doing surgery. It should be so versatile, unobtrusive and unobstructive that it should be the least worrisome part of the case…MAYFIELD is that.”* —Professor of Neurosurgery 8 years in practice
“Everybody has trained on the MAYFIELD headrest for decades. So, everybody is using it, and everybody feels comfortable with the MAYFIELD headrest system.”* - Neurosurgeon, 30 years in practice
“I like the MAYFIELD. I like the feel of it in my hands…When I put it together and I assemble it to put on the patient, I can almost do it with my eyes closed.”* - Neurosurgeon, 8 years in practice
Dr. Frank Mayfield revolutionized the way neurosurgical procedures take place by creating cranial stabilization tools and fixation systems. In the years since, the Integra LifeSciences MAYFIELD team was a key partner in developing the ASTM Standard F3395/F3395M-19 for neurosurgical head holder devices.1

I prefer the PEEK [MAYFIELD 2]…You can image through much more of it… because not only did they change the components, they also changed and improved on the mechanism of it. So, what they have done with the PEEK, they make it truly a two-person operation from a three-person operation.
—Neurosurgeon, 3 years in practice
“[MAYFIELD] is the industry standard.”
—Neurosurgeon, 10 years in practice
“I always prefer [MAYFIELD 2] over the metallic because I like the release and the lock mechanism, which you have for the head holder, much better than a plunger pull out. I feel like it has much less chance of ever getting stuck. I like that better in all situations.”
—Neurosurgeon, 11 years in practice
“MAYFIELD has done it better… MAYFIELD I think is the standard in the field and it’s really the standard that I used in training.”
—Neurosurgeon, 3 years in practice
- Visualize and locate a sweatband on the patient. Sweatband = Stability
- Before placing the pins, confirm the two pins on the rocker arm are equidistant from the centerline. Equal Forces = Stability
- Place the skull pins properly to establish stable head fixation.
To limit uncertainty when positioning the MAYFIELD Skull Clamp to the patient’s head, visualize a sweatband on the patient. The skull pins should be applied within the area covered by the sweatband.
If the two skull pins on the rocker are equidistant from the center line, then the forces on these pins will be equal and stable.
If the two skull pins on the rocker are not equidistant from the center line, the forces on these two pins will not be equal and could be unstable.
WARNING: Failure to properly position patient and to fully tighten and secure all adjustable portions of this or any similar device may result in skull pin slippage and serious patient injury.

Intended Use and Safety Information
Please see the Instructions For Use provided with devices for complete Indications For Use, use information, and safety information.
The Mayfield Skull Clamps are placed on the patient’s skull to hold their head and neck securely in a particular place when rigid fixation is desired. The Skull Clamps are indicated for use in open and percutaneous craniotomies as well as spinal surgery when rigid fixation is necessary.
The MAYFIELD Base Units are intended to be used to support a patient during diagnostic examination and/or surgical procedures where a rigid support between surgical table and headrest, or skull clamp is necessary, positional freedom is required.
The Mayfield Skull Pins are intended to be used in conjunction with a skull clamp to hold a patient’s head and neck when rigid skeletal fixation is required.
The BUDDE Halo Retractor Systems are indicated for retraction of brain tissue during neurosurgical procedures. The devices may be used in conjunction with Mayfield® Skull Clamps or may attach to the side rails of the operating room table.
Warning:
The Skull Clamp must be applied along the center line of the patient’s head with pins entering the skull perpendicularly. Failure to properly position the Skull Clamp on the patient’s head could result in patient injury such as scalp laceration due to skull pin slippage. Failure to properly position patient and to fully secure all adjustment positions of the Skull Clamp or any support device may result in patient injury.
